Disability Rights Commission
The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) has been set up to promote civil rights for disabled people. Working in partnership with existing bodies, its functions include:
- acting as a central source of advice on the rights of disabled people;
- helping disabled people secure their rights and eliminating discrimination;
- promoting equalisation of opportunities for disabled people with those of non-disabled people;
- promoting good practice and working effectively with business, the public and voluntary sectors;
- advising on the operation of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), and being even-handed when giving advice to all stakeholders, notably disabled people, employers and service providers;
- promoting conciliation in cases of dispute, but also, when necessary, the development of case law which will clarify the rights and responsibilities of all concerned;
- operating effectively, keeping red tape to a minimum.
