Armed Forces Compensation Scheme The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) is designed to provide compensation, irrespective of fault, across the full range of circumstances in which illness, injury or death may arise as a result of your service. For the first time it will make lump sum payments for pain and suffering, even where an injury or illness does not lead to your medical retirement. It will provide compensation where an injury can be expected to affect significantly your earnings capacity. And it will provide an income for your spouse, civil partner or partner and for your children in the event of your death. The AFCS does not seek to affect your right to make a civil claim if you think that the injury, illness or death was caused by the Department's negligence; if there has been negligence, a civil claim may lead to a higher award.
