Bereavement and Casualty
Main Aims:
- To offer support, comfort, friendship and advice to those newly bereaved whose spouse was serving in the Royal Air Force at the time of their death.
- To work with the Royal Air Force and the Ministry of Defence and to encourage them to recognise their responsibilities to their widows and to make widows an integral part of the community service.
- To address matters relating to Royal Air Force Widows and their children.
Regrettably, Membership cannot be extended to widows whose husband died more than 10 years ago, or who had left the RAF more than 2 years before their death.
The Association welcomes contact from servicepersons who have widowed and who have problems or issues with which we may be able to help.
Summary of History and Activities:
- Charitable status January 1994 with full constitution, Aim and Objectives and official logo.
- Officially recognised by Ministry of Defence.
- National support network established.
- Now make contact with all new Royal air Force widows - maintain contact for two years minimum.
- Access to Ministers - regular meetings at ministerial level - Minister for the Armed Forces and Minister for War Pensions.
- Consulted on certain policy documents and reviews - regular meetings with senior civil servants.
- Regular informal access and 6 monthly official meetings with Air Member for Personnel.
- Close working relationship with Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.
- After Care guide - close liaison with Headquarter Air Command, RAF High Wycombe on the writing of the aftercare guide and guide for Assisting Officers.
- Produced a handbook for widows - with useful contact numbers and information on pensions.
- National system of clergy both Royal Air Force and civilian willing to offer bereavement support.
- Ensure that all widows receive their correct pensions.
- All widows encouraged to apply for War Widow status.
- National meetings arranged to offer bereavement support, practical help and activities for enjoyment and relaxation.
- Offer access to counselling and other sources of help.
- Training Video - worked with Royal Air Force to produce a training video.
- Founder members of the Tri-Service Defence Widows' Working Party - 1993.
