HM Forces Discount Railcard

Introduction
The Forces Railcard Scheme allows service personnel and their entitled dependants to purchase for £10 a Railcard that will give reductions on certain rail fares. The Railcard is valid for one year from the date of issue. They will increase in cost again to £12.50 with effect from 1 November 2006 and then to £15.00 with effect from 1 November 2007.

The following are eligible to be issued with a Railcard:

  • All members of the Regular forces (including university, medical and dental cadets) wherever they are stationed, UK based members of the Brigade of Ghurkhas and members of other government's defence forces serving in official exchange appointments.
Eligibility
The following are eligible to be issued with a Railcard:

  • All members of the Regular forces (including university, medical and dental cadets) wherever they are stationed, UK based members of the Brigade of Ghurkhas and members of other government's defence forces serving in official exchange appointments.
  • All partners of personnel in Personal Status Category (PStatCat) 1.
  • Dependant children as follows:
    • Unmarried children (including legitimate, adopted and stepchildren) over the age of 16 years and under the age of 18 years who are normally resident in the household.
    • A son or daughter of 18 years and over certified by a medical authority to be suffering from physical or mental infirmity who is normally resident in the household.
    • A son or daughter over 18 years of age who is acting as the serviceman's housekeeper for compassionate reasons. A son or daughter over the age of 18 but under the age of 25 whom is normally resident in the household and is in full time education.
    • In addition up to four children aged 5 to 15 years inclusive can travel in standard accommodation when accompanying the Railcard Holder, or his spouse, at a flat fare (currently £2). These tickets can only be purchased in association with a Railcard discounted fare; they cannot be obtained in exchange for a HM Forces rail travel warrant. This concession is not available to other dependants holding a Railcard.
An individual may possess another type of Railcard, for example a Young Persons Railcard, as well as a new HM Forces railcard. However, no more than one valid HM Forces Railcard may be held at any one time.

Applications
Application forms may be obtained from Unit Admin Offices. A 41mm x 50mm photograph is required for a Railcard.

Surrender of Rail Cards
Cards are to be returned to the Unit Admin Office for destruction when:

  • Leaving the Service.
  • A son or daughter, because of age, ceases to be entitled.
  • Divorce or separation becomes effective.
Losses

If you lose your Rail Card you are to report the matter immediately to your administering unit. Loss or misuse may lead to disciplinary action being taken.

Misuse

If you do not abide by the conditions of issue of your Rail Card you are liable to have the card withdrawn. Fraudulent misuse may result in action being taken. Cards that become defaced, damaged, mutilated, torn or altered in any way will no longer be valid.
